Josephus, the Jewish historian, describes the foundations of Herod's temple in War v 5.1.189; Ant. Xv 11.1.392; and War v.5.6.224. Seven courses of this Herodian masonry now exists above ground at the Western Wall, formerly known as the "Wailing Wall.." Underground may be as much as 19 courses. Above these levels of Herod's temple are four courses of masonry from the Roman and Byzantine period and above those are the courses of masonry from the Turkish period.
